Dr. Ayo Ajayi Appointed Vice President For Field Programs

SEATTLE, Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- PATH today announced the appointment of Ayo Ajayi, MD, MPH, as vice president of field programs, effective September 1, 2008. Dr. Ajayi is an internationally recognized expert with more than 25 years of experience in global health, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. His areas of expertise include building health service capacity and developing culturally appropriate service-delivery models in low-resource settings.


Ajayi will lead strategy development and implementation for PATH's country programs in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean. He will represent the organization internationally, nationally, and locally and serve as the primary liaison between PATH headquarters and field offices. Ajayi replaces Harriet Stanley, PhD, who has left PATH to return to her home community in British Columbia, Canada.

New Zogby Poll Results Bad News for McCain, Obama

Nearly 2 in 3 voters want someone else: 62.4% of Americans say they would like to see better choices of candidates, parties in future

WASHINGTON, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A new Zogby poll commissioned by Joseph Farah, WorldNetDaily founder and author of the new book: "None of the Above: Why 2008 is the Year to Cast the Ultimate Protest Vote" indicates a large percentage are ready to throw in the towel rather than vote for either of the two candidates in Nov. 2008.

Unlike any other scientific poll conducted in 2008, this survey asked randomly selected respondents about their level of enthusiasm for presidential candidates and offered the actual alternatives to the major party candidates that will appear on most ballots across the country - as well as the option of simply not voting.


"I think what we see here confirms my observation that there is widespread disenchantment with the two major-party nominees, something that has simply not been adequately measured before this poll," Farah says. "There is a leaderless, grass-roots movement out there to boycott both McCain and Obama in 2008 - to make a statement, to demand better candidates in the future from better parties. This could be a historic election for non-participation in a year with no high-profile third-party alternatives."


Barack Obama came in first with just 38.1 percent of the vote to John McCain's 33.6 percent.


A whopping 21.3 percent said they were still undecided - a remarkably high figure for this late in the campaign that ends Nov. 4. But another 7.3 percent indicated they would not be voting at all.


Only 21.7 percent of respondents described themselves as very excited about the choice of candidates for president this year. A similar number, 21.5 percent, said they were "not at all" excited about the options.


Younger voters say they want more competition in the political marketplace. Some 83 percent of voters 18-24 express that opinion, while 73 percent of those between 25-34 do. In addition, 76.4 percent of those who describe themselves as "very conservative" say they want more viable candidate and party choices in the future.


It also appears the enthusiasm gap hits McCain harder than Obama, with 22.3 percent of Republicans expressing no excitement at all over the election vs. 11.9 percent of Democrats. On the other hand, 35.3 percent of Democrats say they are "very much" excited about the choice vs. 14.4 percent of Republicans.

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. For more than a week, the people of the nation of Georgia have withstood assault from the Russian military. The world has watched with alarm as Russia invaded a sovereign neighboring state and threatened a democratic government elected by its people. This act is completely unacceptable to the free nations of the world.


The United States and our allies stand with the people of Georgia and their democratically elected government. We insist that Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity be respected. And Moscow must honor its pledge to withdraw its invading forces from all Georgian territory.


Earlier this week I directed a series of steps to demonstrate America's solidarity with the Georgian people and to help bring about a peaceful resolution of the conflict. On Thursday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was in France, where she conferred with President Sarkozy about the diplomatic effort that the French government is leading on behalf of the European Union.


Yesterday, she was in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, where she conveyed America's support for Georgia's democratic government. And next week, Secretary Rice will travel to Brussels, where she will meet with the foreign ministers of our NATO allies and EU officials to continue our efforts to rally the free world in defense of a free Georgia.


Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is overseeing a mission by the United States military to provide humanitarian aid for the people of Georgia. In recent days, U.S. cargo planes carrying humanitarian supplies have arrived in Georgia. In the days ahead, we will continue using U.S. aircraft and other assets as needed to deliver more humanitarian and medical supplies. Russia has agreed to let in all forms of humanitarian assistance, and Russia must keep open all lines of communication and transport, including seaports, airports, roads, and airspace for civilian transit and the delivery of humanitarian assistance.


Some Americans listening today may wonder why events taking place in a small country halfway around the world matter to the United States. In the years since it gained independence after the Soviet Union's collapse, Georgia has become a courageous democracy whose people are making the tough choices that are required of free societies.


Since the Rose Revolution in 2003, the Georgian people have held free elections, opened up their economy, and built the foundations of a successful democracy. Georgia has sent troops to Afghanistan and Iraq to help others achieve the liberty that they struggled so hard to attain. To further strengthen their democracy, Georgia has sought to join the free institutions of the West. The people of Georgia have cast their lot with the free world, and we will not cast them aside.


Georgia's emergence as a young democracy has been part of an inspiring and hopeful new chapter in Europe's history. Europe has moved beyond the world wars that killed millions of people and the Cold War that divided its citizens between two superpowers. For the first time in memory, Europe is becoming a continent that is whole, free, and at peace. And it is essential that America and other free nations ensure that an embattled democracy seeking to stand with us remains sovereign, secure, and undivided.


Russia's actions in Georgia raise serious questions about its role and its intentions in the Europe of the 21st century. In recent years, Russia has sought to integrate into the diplomatic, political, economic, and security structures of the West. The United States has supported those efforts. Now Russia has put its aspirations at risk by taking actions in Georgia that are inconsistent with the principles of those institutions.


To begin to repair the damage to its relations with the United States, Europe, and other nations, and to begin restoring its place in the world, Russia must act to end this crisis.

President Bush's basic conception of a "global War on Terror," to take but the most obvious example, "has been poorly thought-through, badly implemented, and has produced many unintended costs that will linger for years if not decades. But blanket criticism of Bush misses an important reality."

He writes that for "whatever reasons and through whichever path, the foreign policies in place now are more sensible, moderate and mainstream. In many cases the next president should follow rather then reverse them."


Zakaria examines the administration's successes in American foreign policy, while also noting its failures, in the August 18-25 cover "What Bush Did Right" (on newsstands Monday, August 11). "The administration that became the target of so much passion and anger -- from Democrats, Republicans, independents, foreigners, Martians, everyone -- is not quite the one in place today. The foreign policies that aroused the greatest anger and opposition were mostly pursued in Bush's first term: the invasion of Iraq, the rejection of treaties, diplomacy and multilateralism. In the last few years, many of these policies have been modified, abandoned or reversed. This has happened without acknowledgment -- which is partly what drives critics crazy -- and it's often been done surreptitiously. It doesn't reflect a change of heart so much as an admission of failure; the old way simply wasn't working."


He writes: "Consider as a symbol of this shift Bush's appointment of the World Bank's president. His first choice for the job was Paul Wolfowitz, an arch neoconservative with little background in economics. But by the time Wolfowitz was forced to resign and the post opened up again, Bush realized that he needed a less ideological choice, and he picked the highly qualified and respected Robert Zoellick. Where Dick Cheney was once the poster child for the administration, today policy is being run by Condoleezza Rice, Robert Gates, Stephen Hadley and Hank Paulson -- all pragmatists. Change has not extended to all areas, and in many places it's been too little, too late. But that there has been a shift to the center in many crucial areas of foreign policy is simply undeniable."


All this is not meant as a defense of George W. Bush, Zakaria writes. He offers this corrective "because we cannot go back to 2001. The next president will inherit the world as it is in 2009. He will have to examine the Bush administration's policies as they stand in January 2009 -- not as they were in 2001 or 2002 or 2003 -- and decide how to accept, modify and alter them. There was a U.S. president who came into office convinced that everything his predecessor had done was feckless, stupid, ill-informed and venal. He rejected and tried to reverse everything that he could, almost as an article of faith. Before he had even examined the policies carefully, he knew that they had to be changed. The base of his party was delighted by his clarity and fighting spirit.


"That president, of course, was George W. Bush. His decision to blindly repudiate anything associated with Bill Clinton is what got us into this mess in the first place. Let's hope that the next president, no matter how much he despises Bush, will take a careful look at his administration's policies, America's interests, and the world beyond and do the right thing for the country and its future."

Yes, it was definitely the most spectacular opening ceremony so far in the history of the Olympic games and China surpassed the expectations of the rest of the world with the grandiose panorama of Chinese Arts and Culture in an awesome opera in the Beijing National Stadium in Beijing, People's Republic of China. I saw the colourful faces of the people in the stadium beaming in ecstasy, but thousands of prisoners of conscience were languishing in Chinese jails while the rest of the world were dazed and fazed by the dazzling three-hour razzmatazz of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. But the Reporters without Borders were not fazed by the Dancing Beijing and the Olympic rings, because they held a protest in front of the Chinese embassy in Washington to remind the ignorant of the truth, lest they would be fooled by the Chinese scribes, Pharisees, and hypocrites and their apologists, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and their capitalist trading partners who are major stakeholders in the largest market on earth. The Chinese government can fool the whole world, but they cannot fool God and those who can still hear the voice of their conscience. Of course, neither President Hu Jintao nor Premier Wen Jiabao listen to their conscience, but does the IOC president, Jacques Rogge have a conscience? Did he not say, he has "absolutely no regrets"?

Come and demonstrate outside Chinese embassies and online on 8 August
Reporters Without Borders is calling for demonstrations outside China's embassies in London, Madrid, Berlin, Paris, Washington and Stockholm on 8 August, when the Olympic Games opening ceremony will be taking place in Beijing. Two demonstrations will be organised on 7 August in Rome and Ottawa. A rally is also planned outside the Olympic Museum in the Swiss city of Lausanne.

In Paris, those wanting to take part should meet at 1 p.m. at the corner of Avenue George V and Rue de la Trémoille in Paris' 8th district. Reporters Without Borders will distribute "Beijing 2008" T-shirts to participants, as well other material for a peaceful demonstration.

Here are the times and venues of the demonstrations in the other cities:
- Berlin: in front of the Chinese embassy (Jannowitzbrücke) from 1 p.m. onwards on 8 August.
- Washington: near the Chinese embassy (2300 Connecticut Ave) from 8 a.m. onwards on 8 August.
- Stockholm: outside the Chinese embassy (Lidovägen 8) at 1 p.m. on 8 August.
- Lausanne: outside the Olympic Museum (Quai d'Ouchy 1) from 5 p.m. onwards on 8 August.
- Rome: outside the 4th district town hall at noon on 7 August.
- Ottawa: outside the Chinese embassy (515 St. Patrick Street) from noon onwards on 7 August.
- London: outside the Chinese embassy (49-51 Portland Place) from 1 p.m. onwards on 8 August.
- Madrid: outside the Chinese embassy (Calle Arturo Soria, 113) from 1 p.m. onwards on 8 August.

The aim of these demonstrations is to call for the release of Chinese journalists and human rights activists who have been imprisoned, and for an end to the harassment of those who been placed under surveillance or forced to leave Beijing. The Chinese government has not kept the promises to improve respect for human rights that it made in 2001, when Beijing was chosen to host the 2008 Olympics.

Reporters Without Borders is also organising a cyber-demonstration on 8 August at this web address: http://www.rsfbeijing2008.org. Internet users all over the world will be able to come and protest outside a virtual version of Beijing's Olympic Stadium, waving a placard with the slogan of their choice.

In early 2008, the Federal Government of Nigeria launched a Gas Master Plan through which it is seeking to unlock the country's massive gas potential for the accelerated economic development of Nigeria. The principle underlying the government's Policy Direction for Gas is to competitively position Nigerian gas in terms of cost competitiveness and scalability of capacity. The Policy is focused on an integrated infrastructure strategy to support domestic, regional and export LNG markets while attracting new players into the Nigerian gas value chain and ensuring commerciality for all investments. Today, Nigeria reportedly contains proved gas reserves of approximately 182 Tcf, ranking it seventh in the world. Through the Gas Master Plan, the Nigerian government is encouraging the beginning of dedicated gas exploration, and has stated that Nigeria has the potential to increase gas reserves to as much as 600 Tcf which would establish it as the fourth largest in the world. The integrated gas utilization project proposed by the Consortium and approved by the Federal Government is intended to include the exploration and development of gas fields in Nigeria, including the Corporation's OML137, to secure the gas reserves necessary to commercialise a new LNG production facility of up to 10 million tonnes per annum to be sited on Brass Island in Bayelsa State, to provide domestic power generation capacity of up to 1,000 megawatts and to provide feedstock for the development of petrochemical facilities.


As part of the Federal Government approval, the Consortium has been instructed to cooperate with the Nigerian Ministry of State for Energy (Gas), the Department of Petroleum Resources and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to establish fiscal and commercial terms for the upstream and downstream activities that meet the required investment levels for all participants in the project. The Corporation believes that these negotiations will take place rapidly and can be concluded in a timely fashion to achieve final investment decision by the end of 2009.


As at December 31, 2007, Netherland, Sewell & Associates Inc. ("NSAI") estimates the Corporation's best estimate contingent gas resources in Nigeria to be 2,414.8 Bcf and associated liquids to be 77.2 MMbbl. Contingent gas resources reported are limited to the Corporation's producing license areas in the shallow water and onshore license areas of Nigeria only. These gas resources are discovered but are categorized as contingent because the commerciality of the gas resources and the terms by which the Corporation can produce the gas resources are yet to be established.

Contingent resources are those quantities estimated, as of a given date, to be potentially recoverable from known accumulations using established technology or technology under development, but which are not currently considered to be commercially recoverable due to one or more contingencies. Addax Petroleum's contingent gas resources for OML123 are comprised of natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas ("LPG") and pentanes plus ("C5+") components, and are located in fields in which wells have been drilled through the gas portion of the reservoirs to help define the gas pay thickness, reservoir quality and areal extent. There are no gas sales from the properties since no gas market connection is available, and Addax Petroleum has yet to conclude negotiations with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation ("NNPC") regarding the terms governing the exploitation of gas under its production sharing contracts. It is currently investigating commercialization of produced gas through several markets. No economic evaluation has been performed on these resources as at December 31, 2007. All produced gas is presently flared, consumed for lease use or re-injected into the oil reservoirs to maintain reservoir pressure. There is no certainty that these contingent resources will be commercially viable.
