The United Nations and Loots from African Rulers

The United Nations and Loots from African Rulers

What Kept me guessing is how the Western world, including Australia and some Asian countries keep on being the custodians of the ill-gotten loots of many African rulers (both current and past). We Africans will only know about the loots when there is political crisis such as the uprisings in North Africa, if one of them is overthrown or suddenly died.

Muammar Gaddafi speaking at the United Nations Assembly

Though we still see the loots with our very eyes; having oil wells, private universities, 5 star hotels, directors of many corporate organizations where they invested their loots. One other thing is that the Muslim heads of state of the troubled countries are more corrupt than ever; stealing in the name of Allah, deceiving their people or are they just kleptomaniacs?

President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe

How on earth can an Africa ruler be the richest man in the world by just being the President of his country and stashing away his country’s wealth worth $70 billion; and the United Nations is aware of this wickedness meant to his country and they condoned this loots and continue to dine and wine with him. If Mubarak is worth this, what about others?

Hosni Mubarak of Egypt

Now Gaddafi of Libya is another monster that must be stopped by all means. Since I came into this world all I know about Libyan history from my secondary to university education is Gaddafi and because of this crisis we now know the loot he has acquired over the years. What is left to do is change the name Libya to Gaddafi. There is this adage that says “he who protects and hides a thief is also a thief”. Since these countries in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Australia and the Middle East in the United Nations and members of the Commonwealth are part of this conspiracy of keeping the loots, they should use their tongue to count their teeth. No wonder the late Afro Beat King Fela Anikulapo Kuti call it "Disunited Nations". Can United States of America be honest to African Countries by telling us who and who is having our African money dumped in the banks in their country. In my country we know that banks look for deposits, with $70 billion in America banks including others yet to be mentioned why America economy won’t recover fast after the financial crisis. International Monetary Fund IMF will continue to tell African Countries to devalue her currencies I think the IMF is lending to African Countries the loots of our rulers most of the banks are hiding especially the notorious “Swiss banks. “Why will United Nation and Common Wealth not address this man’s inhumanity to man. Suspend them from league of civilized people and isolate them, and return the loots back to Africa instead of enslaving us more with borrowed funds from IMF.

Demonstrators trampling on the poster of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi

In African countries after being an ex this or that they will become multi millionaires and receive awards of best looters and diversion of public funds, this have been the bane of African development over the years. United Nation, don’t wait to give us relief fund, no fly zones and humanitarian activities but refuse and impose sanctions on any bank that indulge in keeping this loots

Nelson Mandela

We have had leaders in Africa like Julius Nyerere of Tanzania of blessed memory, Joaquin Chissano of Mozambique and Madiba Nelson Mandela, I don’t know about others.

Play "Catch the Bomb" and Spread the Word

Every year, millions of people suffer as a result of the irresponsible arms trade.

Two years ago, 153 governments voted at the United Nations to start work on developing an international Arms Trade Treaty. We want as many people as possible to take action to control the arms trade.

Play "Catch the Bomb" and spread the word

Throughout 2008, a group of experts from 28 countries has been meeting to discuss the content of the treaty. Now is the time to turn words into action and deliver an Arms Trade Treaty strong enough to save lives and stop irresponsible arms deals.

A small minority of governments opposes international controls on the arms trade and is determined to block, derail and delay any further progress on the treaty. They must not be allowed to succeed.

Tell your government that the world is watching, it’s time for an Arms Trade Treaty.

Thank you for supporting us,

The Control Arms Team

Why There is Scarcity of Gasoline in America, But Not in Norway:

Newt and Callista participate in a sea safari in Bodo, Norway.
Newt and Callista participate in a sea safari in Bodo, Norway.

Newt Gingrich and his beautiful Callista sent the following report from their vacation in Norway and he has addressed the energy crisis plaguing the United States and the solution to end the high price of gasoline. He tells us why there is scarcity of gasoline America, but not in Norway. This is a must read.

Report From Norway: Why They Don't Have an Energy Crisis and We Do
by (more by this author)
Posted 06/10/2008 ETUpdated 06/10/2008 ET

I am writing to you this week from Norway, where Callista and I have witnessed extraordinary natural beauty - and some things America could learn about creating a more sensible balance between protecting the environment and finding more domestic sources of energy.
You see, Norway, unlike the United States, has successfully avoided the "everywhere versus nowhere" trap when it comes to drilling offshore for oil and gas.

The "everywhere versus nowhere" trap results when aggressive energy developers demand the unconstrained right to drill everywhere while environmental extremists assert that drilling can occur nowhere. This is the stalemate we currently have in the United States, with disastrous consequences. Emotion trumps science. Regulation blocks innovation. And sound methods of achieving energy independence are overlooked and underdeveloped. And gas prices go up, up, up.

A Case Study in Green Conservatism
The six days Callista and I have spent traveling around Norway have convinced us that Norway is a case study in Green Conservatism. Norway has struck a remarkable balance between respect for the environment and energy independence; between stewardship of the earth and global economic competition. It is a place of both enduring natural beauty and the third largest oil exporter in the world.

Our cruise on Hurtigruten cruise line has to rank among the most beautiful voyages in the world.
We visited an island with 1.3 million puffins, watched reindeer running five feet away from us through a fishing village (it was startling), saw sea eagles which are enormous and were once endangered but have had a huge comeback. There are now 2,500 pairs of sea eagles in Norway due to ending the use of the pesticides which were decimating them (proving, in good Green Conservative fashion, that there are good environmental causes).

All of this in a country that has made itself the 10th largest oil and gas producer in the world by doing something that is virtually off limits in the United States: Drilling offshore for oil and gas.
The U.S. Was Once a Leader in Offshore Drilling. Today Norway Is

The United States was a leader in the creation of the offshore drilling industry in the 1950s and early 1960s, but today it's countries like Norway that are leaders in the field.
Norway's annual output of 1.6 billion barrels of oil comes exclusively from offshore drilling. Oil and natural gas are transported through a network of sub seafloor pipelines. Norway is the home to the world's largest natural gas drilling platform. And the truly remarkable fact is that Norway has built this robust offshore oil and gas drilling industry alongside large and thriving fishing and tourism industries.

The Norwegian Model: Trust, Common Sense, and Green Conservatism
Norway has avoided the "everywhere versus nowhere" trap that has paralyzed U.S. offshore drilling through a common sense approach that is textbook Green Conservatism.
In Norway, strong environmental protections were part of exploration, drilling and transportation of oil and natural gas from the outset. This initial environmental emphasis has built the sense of trust necessary to allow Norway to move to a cooperative, performance-based model rather than a regulation-based model like we have in the U.S.

Norway has relatively few laws, regulations and government agencies that govern offshore drilling. Their equivalent of our Supreme Court - the Hoyesterett - reportedly declined jurisdiction over offshore drilling on the grounds that it lacks expertise!

The result is a policy in which environmental concerns are carefully balanced with energy needs. Norwegians have put some areas off-limits to drilling. In some areas, drilling is carefully circumscribed. But the point is that drilling occurs. Environmental concerns have informed - not pre-empted-Norway's oil and gas industry.

The American Model: Distrust, Stalemate and Energy Crisis
Compare that to the United States, where a series of congressional prohibitions and presidential moratoria on offshore drilling - fed by public mistrust and largely unfounded environmental fears - have placed virtually all of the offshore United States off limits to drilling.
The United States is the only country in the world that so dramatically limits the exploration and development of its offshore oil and gas deposits.

The hysteria is so acute that both of our current presidential candidates even voted in 2005 in favor of willful ignorance about our domestic energy resources. Each voted for an amendment that would have removed from the energy bill that ultimately passed a provision for a comprehensive inventory of the oil and natural gas resources in the offshore continental shelf of the United States. Fortunately the amendment failed -- even though one of the two candidates is still the sole sponsor of a bill to repeal the authorization of the inventory. You can read the inventory here that 44 U.S. Senators didn't want you to read and learn that the U.S. Minerals Management Service estimates a mean of 85.9 billion barrels of undiscovered recoverable oil and a mean of 419.9 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered recoverable natural gas in the Federal Outer Continental Shelf of the United States.

I'm not suggesting that the United States adopt the level of government involvement in oil and gas that Norway has (its major petroleum producer, Statoil, is a public-private company). And I'm too much of a realist to think that the U.S. oil and gas industry and the environmental groups are going to suddenly sit down, hold hands together, and forget their differences.
What I am advocating is a more informed public making its demands of energy independence clear to our government.

New Poll Shows Broad, Bipartisan Support for Tapping Domestic Energy Sources, Including Offshore
Last week American Solutions released the results of new survey research dealing with energy security, coal and climate change. The adults surveyed made clear that Congress should prioritize increasing the availability of affordable energy over battling climate change.
In pursuit of the immediate goal of energy security, clear majorities of Americans of every political and ideological stripe advocated the U.S. tap into its voluminous domestic energy resources, including the oil located off its coasts and in Alaska and the coal deep within its grounds. Clean coal was particularly popular and Americans urged the swift building of zero emissions coal plants.

Americans prefer a greater use of domestic energy sources and an innovation-encouraging tax policy that rewards businesses for new energy solutions. While there were some political and ideological differences, for the most part, Americans stood united in favor of a smart, practical energy policy that would allow them to drive to work and power their homes without breaking their bank accounts. For additional information, including the survey results, click here.

A Vote to Watch: The Peterson Amendment to Lift the Offshore Drilling Moratorium
This week, Congressman John Peterson (R-Pa.) will offer an amendment to the Interior Appropriations bill that would lift the congressional moratorium on offshore drilling.
Contact your member of Congress today and urge them to support the Peterson Amendment to restore sanity and common sense to our domestic energy policy.
Every American should keep their eyes on the House Appropriations Committee this week to see whether members vote to support our desire for environmentally responsible increased domestic energy production, or whether they continue to bury their heads in the sand.

The Dictators' Roman Holiday
Now on to a completely different topic.
In a display of arrogance and hypocrisy that was outrageous even for the United Nations, UN food development officials last week accused the United States of raising global food prices by subsidizing ethanol production.

Actually, the outrage began even earlier.
Only the United Nations would invite a dictator who has purposefully starved his own people to a summit on the international food crisis. But that is precisely what happened in Rome last week. Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe, who has starved his political enemies and channeled food aid to only favored groups, was in attendance, as was the Iranian dictator, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. It has already been one year since the U.S. Congress voted 411-2 to call on the UN Security Council to punish Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for violating the UN Charter and the UN Convention on Genocide for his repeated incitement of genocide against the Israeli people, yet the Iranian dictator is still welcome at UN events.

True to form, Ahmadinejad used the international spotlight to once again predict the demise of the state of Israel and accuse the U.S. of plotting an attack on him.
Mugabe accused the West, not his own genocidal policies, of starving his people.
In other words, it was a typical gathering for the United Nations.

Europe's Resistance to GM Foods, Not America's Support for Biofuels, Has Contributed to the Global Food Crisis
But the infuriating arrogance of UN bureaucrats lecturing the world's largest provider of food aid - and the single greatest contributor to the UN food fund - cannot be allowed to pass without comment.

In fact, it is the Europeans irrational resistance to genetically modified (GM) crops - aided and abetted by extremists on the left

-- that is responsible for much of the hunger in Africa and the rest of the developing world.
GM crops that are commonplace in the U.S.

- crops that don't need expensive pesticides and even potentially are drought resistance - are banned in Europe. And Europe and the Left's misinformation about the health and safety of these foods has led most African nations to ban them too for fear of being shut out of lucrative European export markets.

South Africa is the only African nation that grows GM crops. And while food production in the rest of Africa is 20 percent per capita less than it was in 1970, South Africa is producing surplus amounts of crops through biotechnology.

The U.S. Should Refuse to Participate in Future UN Charades
The UN food crisis gathering ignored the issue of GM foods, of course, but it did call on member nations to kick in at least $20 billion a year to help ease global hunger.
President Bush, who has tripled U.S. aid to Africa during his presidency, should ignore this demand and publicly refuse to participate in farces with vicious, murdering thugs like Mugabe and Ahmadinejad like the one in Rome last week.

President Bush should transition U.S. assistance to direct, bilateral forms only. Our willingness to allow UN bureaucrats and international dictators to lecture us in public strengthens them and isolates us. Far from feeding hungry people, it consigns them to lives of poverty, desperation and premature death.

For their good, and for our national self-respect, we should stop being a part this charade.

Newt Gingrich

Samantha Power Quits

I thank God Samantha Power, resigned with apologies and regrets for her terrible utterances against Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Samantha Power is brilliant without doubt. But you cannot blame Bill Clinton for the Rwandan Genocide as you cannot blame President George W. Bush for the the genocide in Darfur happening before our very eyes.

I am 100% Black African who is committed to the efforts to end the Darfur Crisis and communicated with the former UN Special Envoy to Sudan, Jan Pronk and my own insider in Darfur on how to stop the massacre of innocent people in Darfur. But the Sudanese government and the rebels have continued to pour fuel in the fire of the conflict in Darfur and they are both guilty of the genocide.

The African Union and the UN are guiltier than the former President Bill Clinton on the Rwandan Genocide. I do not think there is anything Bill Clinton would have done to stop the genocide in the hellish circumstances if the UN failed to do so.

America cannot be over burdened with the existential crises on earth.
America is not the burden bearer of the world.
There are more burdens in America than in Sudan.

Despotic African rulers and the rebels are corrupt and wicked and when they fight over power, they do not care to slaughter millions of their peoples.
America is blameless.

I was a refugee child during one of the worst civil wars in Africa and over 1 million people died, including my elder sister and two younger brothers, because of the foolishness of the rebels and the wickedness of the government forces.

Is America responsible for the horrors of Zimbabwe under the monstrous rule of Robert Mugabe?

Samantha Power can win the Pulitzer Prize as my compatriot Dele Olojede won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for his "fresh haunting look at Rwanda a decade after rape and genocidal slaughter had ravaged the Tutsi tribe”, but there is no moral justification for her petty disdain, malice and prejudice against the Clintons. She has confirmed my hypothesis that most of those working for Barack Obama's presidential campaign have old grudges and scores to settle with the Clintons.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction.... The chain reaction of evil--hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars--must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation."

Measles Deaths in Africa Plunge by 91%

29 Nov 2007 16:50 Africa/Lagos

Measles Deaths in Africa Plunge by 91%

Africa Leads Strong Decline in Global Measles Deaths

Joint News Release: American Red Cross/UN Foundation/CDC/WHO/UNICEF/62

ATLANTA, GENEVA, NEW YORK and WASHINGTON, Nov. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --

Measles deaths in Africa fell by 91 percent between 2000 and 2006, from an estimated 396,000 to 36,000, reaching the United Nations 2010 goal to cut measles deaths by 90 percent four years early. The spectacular gains achieved in Africa helped generate a strong decline in global measles deaths, which fell 68 percent worldwide -- from an estimated 757,000 to 242,000 -- during this period.

The progress was announced today by the founding partners of the Measles Initiative: the American Red Cross, UNICEF, the United Nations Foundation, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The data will be published in the November 30th editions of WHO's Weekly Epidemiological Record and CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

"This is a major public health success and a tribute to the commitment of countries in the African region," said Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General. "We need to sustain this success and intensify our efforts in other parts of the world, as there are still far too many lives lost to this disease."

The significant decline in measles deaths in Africa was made possible by the firm commitment of national governments to fully implement the measles reduction strategy, which includes vaccinating all children against measles before their first birthday via routine health services and providing a second opportunity for measles vaccination through mass vaccination campaigns.

"The clear message from this achievement is that the strategy works," said CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding. "The next step is to fully implement this strategy in South Asia, where measles disease burden is now the highest in the world."

Mass vaccination campaigns have had a major impact on reducing global measles deaths. From 2000 to 2006, an estimated 478 million children aged nine months to 14 years received measles vaccine through campaigns in 46 out of the 47 priority countries severely affected by the disease.

In 2006, global routine measles vaccination coverage reached an estimated 80 percent for the first time, up from 72 percent in 2000. The largest improvements in vaccination coverage were in the African and the Eastern Mediterranean regions.

"The dramatic drop in measles deaths in Africa and the strong progress being made worldwide are a testament to the power of strong partnerships and the impact they can have on child survival," said Ann M. Veneman, Executive Director of UNICEF. "But measles is still killing nearly 600 children under five every day, an unacceptable reality when we have a safe, effective, and inexpensive vaccine to prevent the disease."

Major challenges still need to be overcome to achieve the goal to cut global measles deaths by 90 percent in the period 2000-2010. Large countries with high numbers of measles deaths, such as India and Pakistan, need to fully implement the proven control strategy. Currently, about 74 percent of measles deaths globally occur in South Asia.

In addition, countries that have implemented accelerated measles control activities must sustain the gains that they have made. This means that all measles priority countries must continue conducting follow-up vaccination activities every two to four years until their routine immunization systems are capable of providing measles vaccination to all children.

"Through the tireless efforts of millions of health workers and volunteers from our Red Cross and Red Crescent family, as well as our dedicated partners, such as the Latter-day Saints, we literally go door-to-door informing, educating and motivating mothers and caregivers about the critical need to vaccinate their children," said Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, Chairman of the Board of the American Red Cross. "These mobilization efforts are essential for our success, helping us consistently reach more than 95 percent of the vulnerable population and saving countless lives."

A key factor contributing to progress in reducing measles deaths has been the strong support of the Measles Initiative. Since its launch in 2001, the Initiative has supported vaccination efforts in over 50 countries and mobilized more than US $470 million with help from partners such as the GAVI Alliance.

"The successful reduction of measles deaths would not be possible without the collaborative work among many partners -- including governments, the United Nations, NGOs, corporations and volunteers from local communities -- each of which bring unique strengths and resources that are essential for success," said Kathy Calvin, executive vice president and chief operating officer, United Nations Foundation. "We commend our partners for coming together to protect children around the world from measles."

Background:

The Measles Initiative is a partnership committed to reducing measles deaths globally. Launched in 2001, the Initiative --- led by the American Red Cross, the United Nations Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, UNICEF and WHO -- provides technical and financial support to governments and communities on vaccination campaigns. We Must Control Arms Or Arms Will Destroy Us

Dear Orikinla,

Your support for the Control Arms campaign, helped 153 governments to vote for starting work on a international Arms Trade Treaty at the First Committee meeting of the United Nations, last year.

Read the Control Arms campaign blog for the latest events and news from the United Nations meeting in New York.

This year, the Control Arms campaigners are taking your demand for a world with better arms controls to the First Committee once again, to ensure governments keep moving forward and don’t let the Arms Trade Treaty process get derailed.
Also at this meeting, Control Arms will be delivering the stories and experiences of people who have been impacted by armed violence to United Nations delegates, as part of the Global People’s Consultation on the Arms Trade Treaty.

The consultation, which was conducted this year with over 100 events happening around the world, details the unreported everyday tragedies of how an unregulated arms trade affects ordinary people and strengthens the urgency for a global and effective treaty.
Thank you for your continued support for an end to an out of control arms trade. Together we can make an impact.

Control Arms Campaign Team
