LA Press Club Announces National Entertainment Journalism Awards

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Nov. 28 /PRNewswire/ --

The Los Angeles Press Club has announced the "National Entertainment Journalism Awards." Entertainment reporters, editors and critics across the country are invited to enter a new journalism contest that honors those who write, speak or blog about one of the nation's most important industries.

The first-ever "National Entertainment Journalism Awards" contest rewards work by print, broadcast and Internet newspeople for their efforts in 2007. Deadline for entries is Friday, January 25, 2008.

The contest is sponsored by the Los Angeles Press Club, which for 50 years has produced one of the nation's most successful regional journalism competitions, the Southern California Journalism Awards. The thriving non-profit club fosters programs aimed at raising the calibre of journalism while also helping students learn the profession. The club is based in Hollywood, the nation's entertainment hub.

"Through our new NEJ awards, we hope to reach hundreds of entertainment journalists around the country who may not have had a worthy forum to make peers aware of their top-quality work," said Press Club President, Anthea Raymond, a veteran radio producer. "We're going to honor the rising stars of journalism who cover the rising stars of the entertainment world."

The contest is divided into separate categories for newspaper reporters and editors, television and radio journalists and bloggers and other online news organizations. The contest focuses on film, television or music reporting and criticism.

Awards will be given for "Best Entertainment News Story," "Best Feature Story" and "Critic of the Year" in each genre. Fees are $35 per entry. The winners will be announced the week leading up to the Academy Awards on February 24th at a gala party at the Press Club's headquarters in Hollywood.

The finalist judges will include former long-time entertainment reporter and columnist, Alex Ben Block, who was most recently editor of Television Week and formerly chief of the Hollywood Reporter; Ted Johnson, Daily Variety's managing editor and USA TODAY film critic, Claudia Puig.
